How to use this DILR guide
Use this guide to build a set library, not to memorise stories. CAT DILR can wrap the same reasoning engine inside a factory, tournament, classroom, network or business caselet. The story changes; the work remains similar. You identify variables, write constraints, choose a representation and answer only after the structure is reliable.
After reading a section, solve two or three sets of that type. Then write a short review: What was the representation? Which condition unlocked the set? Which question was easiest? Did you over-calculate? These notes become valuable before mocks because they remind you what a solvable set feels like.
Set selection
Set selection is the most underrated DILR skill. In the first few minutes of a section, you are not trying to solve everything. You are trying to identify the best entry point. A table with many numbers may be easier than a short paragraph with hidden cases. A tournament set may look familiar but contain a difficult ranking constraint. A chart may be manageable if estimation is enough.
Train selection by scanning sets under a time cap. Write down why you chose or rejected each set. Over time, you will notice your bias. Some students avoid text-heavy sets even when the logic is simple. Others rush into numeric sets and waste time on arithmetic. Selection improves when you review these decisions, not when you simply solve more sets.

Do not force every set into one familiar family. Many CAT-style DILR sets are hybrids. A caselet may combine distribution with tables, or a chart may require logical restrictions before arithmetic. The family label is a starting point, not a cage.
Practice method
A good DILR practice session has three phases. First, solve one or two sets untimed to learn representation. Second, solve a small mixed group with a timer to practise selection. Third, review the unsolved and wrongly solved sets without looking at the solution immediately. Ask what you failed to notice. Did a condition imply a fixed order? Did a table have a hidden total? Did you answer a later question before using an easier earlier one?
When you review, preserve failed attempts. The scratched table, wrong case split or incomplete diagram shows where thinking broke. Clean solutions can look obvious after the fact, but your actual attempt contains the diagnosis. This is why a DILR notebook should include representation errors, not just final answers.
Common DILR mistakes
The first mistake is refusing to leave a set. Sunk-cost behaviour is expensive in DILR. If a set has consumed several minutes without structure, leaving it can protect the rest of the section. The second mistake is doing all work mentally. DILR rewards visible structure: tables, cases, diagrams and contradiction marks. The third mistake is reading a solution and assuming the set is now mastered. You should re-solve the set after a gap to see whether the representation can be rebuilt.
Another mistake is treating DILR as random. It can feel unpredictable, but preparation becomes calmer when you classify sets by engine. You may not know the story in advance, but you can know how to approach constraints, totals, ranking, routes and distributions.
